Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini for Piano and Orchestra. With US orchestras in mind, Rachmaninoff wrote pearly virtuoso music about pearly virtuoso music, and for this, the Konzerthaus had engaged the perfect soloist: Paganini’s familiar A-minor theme, rather distorted and bruised by Rachmaninoff soon after the opening measures, was played artfully by Anika Vavic at the piano, not one note dropped under the Steinway keyboard amidst the whirling action.
