For the Love of Sumptuous Sound

With Anika Vavic, a native of Belgrade, the orchestra had engaged not only a renowned, but also a remarkable soloist for Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

The pianist, who makes her home in Vienna, did not limit herself to repeating a pre-formed interpretation, nor was she out for virtuoso effects either. One had the impression that she likes to make music in the moment, occasionally taking new measure of herself and the work. Apart from the fact that this allowed the listener to experience how fascinating music is created, the subtle approach also suited Shostakovich’s ambiguous composition, which may not have been intended to be taken seriously all the time. Thus, the slow movement, always in danger of turning into an exaggerated idyll, remained charmingly suspended midway. This is only possible, of course, with a technique trained on Haydn and Mozart and exuding perfect poise and gracefulness.
